The Jeep Grand Cherokee is already offered in a V6, V8, and a supercharged V8 in the ferocious SRT-8 derivation. Now, Jeep has unveiled the 2014 V6 EcoDiesel produced by VM Motori Centro in Ferrara, Italy. This motor produces 240hp and 420 ft-lbs of torque from its turboed compacted iron block and aluminum twin-cam heads. The engine also features ceramic glow plugs that ignite fuel faster via common rail injection. The engine is backed by an eight-speed transmission which assists in achieving the Jeeps 22mpg city/30mpg highway fuel economy rating with only about a 1mpg loss in four-wheel mode. The previous five-speed received more than a few complaints in regards to its abrupt shift points and jerky acceleration so the eight-speed is a welcome addition. Towing capacities weigh in around 7400lbs in rear-wheel drive mode and 7200lbs in four wheel drive, these are the same specs as the 5.7 liter V8 model.

The substantial power of the diesel coupled with the fuel efficiency makes the diesel a more expensive option. The VM diesel will only be available on the top three models (the Limited, Overland, and Summit) and will add an additional cost of $2000 on the Limited AWD, $3000 on the Overland AWD, and $5000 on the Summit AWD. To me, the additional cash will be well worth it. Similar torque ratings as the naturally aspirated V8 and a rig as fuel thirsty as a Honda Civic sounds like Chrysler made a deal with the devil. Either way, I’m not asking questions… Soon we’ll do a road test, but until then, here’s a clip of Mark Allen, head of Jeep Design, briefly speaking about some of the new changes to the Grand Cherokee.

Base Price: Limited, $41,290; Overland, $48,490; Summit, $53,490
