The SL65 looks like any other Mercedes SL500 with some dressed up wheels and maybe an aftermarket exhaust, but when you get behind the wheel of this beast you begin to realize this is far from the truth.

The SL500 has a base price of $105,500 whereas the SL65 starts at $214,445 dollars. What do you get for all that money you ask? Well, under the hood lies a massive 621 hp twin-turbo V12 that makes this “Merced” pretty peppy to say the least. The SL65 goes 0-60 in only 3.7 seconds and through the quarter mile at 124 mph in only 11.8 seconds.

Needless to say the SL65 is fast and tops out at a governed 186mph. But wait, these acceleration figures sound a lot like the 557 hp SL63’s numbers…the same car that comes in at a price point $60,000 dollars less the SL65’s base number. In fact, the SL63 is four-tenths faster than the SL65 from 30 to 50 and a half-second faster from 50 to 70 mph. Much of this lack of deviation is because of the way the lesser SL63 is equipped. Specifically the SL63 and the SL65 are specced with the exact same tires in every respect. Although the SL65 AMG has a seven-speed automatic and the SL63 uses a conventional torque-converter, they deliver similar grip when it comes to launching. The SL63 uses a launch control system to keep it in line while the SL65 produces an extra 74 ft-lbs of torque to make up for its lack of launch control.

The biggest difference between the SL63 and the SL65 is between their personalities. The SL63 growls and rasps with aggression, while the SL65 presents itself much more conservatively and accelerates aggressively while maintaining its poise and finesse.
